New York, March 31 (IANS) A hormone known for stimulating milk production in nursing mothers also promotes love making between parents, says a new research.
The results published in the online journal PLoS One found a link between prolactin levels and sexual activity and cuddling among partners.
The study relied on hormone analyses of urine from cotton-top tamarins, a small, endangered monkey native to Colombia. They live in monogamous family groups where both parents help care for the young, which is similar to humans.
Prolactin levels were high among pairs that frequently had sex and cuddled, the findings showed.
"When you look at mothers who had lower prolactin, they had less sex with their partners," said first author Charles Snowdon, emeritus professor of psychology at University of Wisconsin-Madison in the US.
Although this was a first for prolactin, another hormone oxytocin that stimulates childbirth was previously linked to a range of pleasurable emotions.
The discovery in other studies of high prolactin levels among males who care for infants (in humans and other primates) made prolactin seem likely to be causing the parenting behaviour.
But the researchers of the new study believe that prolactin may be a result of parenting instead.
"Maybe it is not serving as a mechanism to drive parental care, but it is a consequence, a reward for parental care," Snowdon noted.
The idea that prolactin and oxytocin may supply rewards was reinforced by a German study that found a burst of both hormones when men and women reached orgasm while making love.
"This suggested to me that prolactin may, among other things, function as a reward mechanism for sex," Snowdon noted.

New York: In a shocking case of racism, a young Sikh boy in the US state of Georgia has been called a "terrorist" by a group of school children, with the video of the abuse now going viral on the Internet.
In the video posted on Inquisitr, the bespectacled Sikh boy is seen sitting in what appears to be a school bus and is surrounded by students.
He whispers to the camera: "The kids are being racist to me."
A young girl sitting behind him then shouts "terrorist! terrorist!" and points her finger at the boy, who remains calm and even shouts "who cares" when the kids hurl abuses at him.
Inquisitr reported that the video was uploaded by a user named 'Nagra Nagra' and identified the Sikh boy as Harsukh Singh.
Singh apparently uploaded the video initially which has so far got 130,000 views, with the description,"Kids being racist to me and calling me an Afghan terrorist. Please don't act like this towards people like me. If you don't know, I'm not Muslim I'm Sikh."
An online user described the video "disgusting" in which the young Sikh boy is "being bullied with racist chants on a school bus. "The Sikh bravely states that he doesn't care what they think of him."
The Inquisitr reported that Singh is a student at the Chattahoochee Elementary School in Duluth, Georgia.
The incident comes weeks after a Hindu temple was vandalised in Seattle. A Nazi swastika and the phrase "get out" was found spray-painted in red on the exterior of the temple and cultural centre in Washington state in February.

Elizabeth ‘Lizzi’ Marriott, 19, had just started to study marine biology at the University of New Hampshire – it was the perfect subject for Lizzi, who adored nature and was always rescuing animals in need.
The university was a few hours away from her home town in Massachusetts, so she was living with her aunt and uncle during term time. The young, trusting student was keen to make friends and settle in.
On October 9, 2012, Lizzi told her aunt and uncle she was going to a friend’s house and she’d be back by midnight. The following day, she still hadn’t returned and her family assumed she’d stayed the night.
But as the hours ticked by, they started to panic. It was very unlike Lizzi not to be in touch. Her parents reported her missing and jumped in the car to search for her.

Lizzi’s last text had said she was visiting a girl called Kat. Police figured out that was Kathryn McDonough who worked with Lizzi at the local department store.
Kat, 19, had acted like a regular teenager before she’d met her boyfriend Seth Mazzaglia, 39, a year earlier. She’d quickly moved in with him, dropped out of school and stopped contacting her family.

Seth had a job at the local electronics store and taught martial arts, but his real obsession was with fetish sex. He’d got Kat involved in bondage and domination and their details were found on fetish websites as they trawled for threesomes. But Lizzi wasn’t part of that world. She’d just wanted to be Kat’s friend.
Police brought Kat and Seth in for questioning. Kat insisted Lizzi had never shown up that day so she’d gone to a local cemetery to try and take photos of ghosts. Seth said he’d gone for a run. But his story soon started to change.
He said Lizzi had come to the house where she’d played strip poker with Kat. He admitted that, afterwards, while they were having consensual sex, Seth had tightened a rope too tight around Lizzi’s neck and she’d had a seizure.
Seth said Kat helped him dump her body in the Piscataqua River which leads to the Atlantic Ocean, but despite extensive searches, police still couldn’t find her. Seth was arrested and charged with murder.
In a bin outside his apartment officers found some of Lizzi’s clothes and a pair of black gloves. But friends and family disputed the sordid story – it was out of Lizzi’s character.
After Seth’s arrest, Kat changed her story and said Lizzi had come to the flat that day but her death was an accident. They’d watched a film, played cards and the night led to consensual sex between the three of them. "It started going from silly to sexual," she admitted.
Kat insisted Lizzi had agreed to be tied up with bondage ropes, but while Kat was on top of Lizzi, she’d suffered a seizure, suffocated and died. The police noted Kat was ‘almost upbeat’ as she described her friend’s death.
Used as ‘an offering’
Police had Seth’s confession but couldn’t prove Kat was involved in the murder. Two months later, she was charged with three counts involving hindering an investigation.
Without a body to provide evidence, authorities had no choice but to offer Kat a deal. If she testified against Seth, she’d get a maximum of three years. She accepted.
In May 2014, Seth Mazzaglia faced the jury. Lizzi still hadn’t been found, so the jury had to believe a murder had taken place.
Kat testified she was under Seth’s control. They had an adventurous sex life and he had explicit demands. A text was read out that Seth had sent Kat weeks before the killing. It read, "You choose a friend, any of yours will do… and you offer her to me that I may do anything I wish with her, while you watch."
Kat admitted she had chosen Lizzi as her ‘offering’ and lured her to their flat to watch a film. Lizzi had no idea she was being set up. Later in the evening, Seth made his move.
"Seth suggested that… I should kiss Lizzi, but she said she wasn’t comfortable with that," Kat said. "He asked her if he could have sex with me… in the room. She said no."
Seth was angry that he’d been told no – and twice. While Lizzi watched a film, he put on the black gloves and reached for a rope. "He moved up behind her and he pulled the rope over her neck and strangled her," Kat said. "She let out a quick noise and then she sort of stopped moving."
Seth then raped her. It was a deeply upsetting testimony for Lizzi’s family.
Kat claimed they put Lizzi’s body into her own car and drove 13 miles to the coast where they threw her off a cliff. When her body landed on rocks, Kat climbed down and pushed her into the water. Afterwards, they dumped the car, Lizzi’s clothing and the rope used to kill her.

Seth’s defence team said it had been a tragic sex game that had gone horribly wrong. They said it was Kat who was in control that night, and had suffocated Lizzi, just as she’d confessed at the start. Seth had gone along with it to please her – and Kat had pinned the crime on her boyfriend to get the lesser sentence.
But the black gloves that were shown to the jury showed premeditation and although Kat was a known liar, she testified for 10 days at Strafford Superior Court while Seth stayed silent. It was her words the jury heard.
After five weeks, Seth was found guilty of first degree murder and rape. At the sentencing, there were emotional statements.
Lizzi’s mother Melissa Marriott said, "Mr. Mazzaglia, I want you to know I unequivocally hate you," she said. "You are a cowardly, despicable person. You stole our smart, vivacious, beautiful daughter from us. You murdered Lizzi, raped her lifeless body and then threw her away because Lizzi had the self-confidence and self-esteem to say no to you."
Lizzi’s dad Bob said, "All the goodness in Lizzi could not save her from you," he told Seth. "When you killed her, you cemented your place on theside of evil."
Seth Mazzaglia protested his innocence. "I did not rape and murder Elizabeth Marriott," he said. "I did play a part in covering up her death… and for that I am truly sorry."
He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Kat McDonough, now 20, will be released in 2016.
All Lizzi wanted was the chance to make friends – but she found enemies. Lizzi’s family are still grieving, and without a body they have no closure. For now, the water that she loved is to be her final resting place.

A groom tried to kill himself after seeing his "ugly" arranged marriage bride for the first time.
Kang Hu, 33, claimed bride Na Sung, 30, would be "bad for his image" after hewalked out of the ceremony and threw himself in a nearby river.
The 33-year-old had stunned guests at the wedding in the city of Shiyan, in central China’s Hubei province, when he apologised to his bride before telling her she was "too ugly".
Drama: Groom is rescued by police
Pal Chan Wang said: "It was a very awkward moment for everyone.
"The bride was devastated, her family were furious, his family were furious, and we his friends were embarrassed.
"Kang has very exact tastes and had been forced into this marriage."
The groom was spotted several hours later wandering along a river bank shortly before throwing himself in the water.
Passers-by called police who were able to rescue him.

"He was unconscious and I thought he was dead.
"When the police arrived one jumped in and dragged him ashore with the help of foremen who put a rope around his chest to pull him out before pumping his chest.
"They saved his life."
Kang was rushed to hospital where doctors said he was in a stable condition.
He later explained: "I feel bad about what happened but when I saw her she wasn’t what I had expected and I realised she would be bad for my image.
"My parents had arranged this and I couldn’t see any way out apart from suicide."

Anti-Russian militaristic hysteria has been snowballing in the West lately. Having noticed the revival of the traditionalist, imperial Russia that the deceitful Western Sodom has been humiliating and insulting for decades, the "free" European and American media filled their reports and pages with alarmist headlines about Moscow's "military preparations."
Should the Russians launch a rocket from the Plesetsk cosmodrome or from a submarine in the Barents Sea, or send its strategic aircraft flying along European borders, countless Western publications explode in accusations of "militarism and imperialism," "nuclear weapons rattling" "intimidation of the international community," and so on and so forth. Meanwhile, important news reports that are directly related to a change in the military-strategic balance of power in Eurasia, often pass unnoticed.
For example, on October 13, 2014, RIA Novosti news agency reported, citing a source at the military-industrial complex of the Russian Federation that Russia decided to launch serial production of air-independent propulsion power plants that would be used for future Project 677 "Lada"submarines."
The message did not receive any attention of the general public. Even military observers paid no proper attention to it. Yet, the news marked a real revolution in the field of military submarine making.
Advantages and disadvantages of underwater hunters
Today, all submarines are divided into two groups by the type of power plants: submarines with a nuclear power plant (nuclear reactor) and diesel-electric submarines that move on the surface with the help of a diesel engine, and use battery-powered electric motors when navigating under the water.
Nuclear submarines appeared in the Soviet Navy in the late 1950s. The first nuclear submarine of Project 627 called the Leninsky Komsomol was put into operation in 1957. Since then and to this day, nuclear submarines constitute the main striking force of the Russian navy. They carry a wide range of most formidable weapons in the world - from strategic intercontinental missiles and tactical nuclear torpedoes to high-precision long-range cruise missiles - the core of the Russian strategic forces of non-nuclear deterrence.
Nuclear submarines possess a number of outstanding advantages. A nuclear sub can stay under the water for a practically unlimited period of time; it has high underwater speed, impressive submersion depth and an ability to carry a huge number of various weapons and equipment. Modern large displacement nuclear subs can be equipped not only with weapons, but also with highly efficient sonars, systems of communications, electronic reconnaissance and navigation.
At the same time, the main advantage of a nuclear power plant - its power - is the source of the main drawback of nuclear submarines. This drawback is noisiness. The presence of a nuclear reactor (and sometimes two) on board the submarine along with a whole range of other systems and mechanisms (turbines, generators, pumps, refrigeration units, fans, etc.) inevitably produces a variety of frequency oscillations and vibrations. Therefore, a nuclear submarine requires sophisticated technology to reduce the noise level.
Yet, a diesel-electric submarine is almost silent under water. Battery-powered electric motors do not require turbines and other noisy equipment. However, a diesel sub can stay under water for a relatively short period of time - just a few days. In addition, a diesel submarine is slow. The shortage of power, in turn, imposes serious constraints on displacement, weapons, and other key characteristics of diesel-electric submarines. In fact, these subs can hardly be referred to as "underwater" vessels. "Diving" would be a better word as they stay on the surface most of the time on deployment routes. In combat patrol areas, diesel-electric submarines have to ascend regularly and start diesel engines to recharge batteries.
For example, Russia's state-of-the-art diesel-electric submarine of Project 636.3 has only 400 miles of undersea navigation. In addition, the submarine moves under water at the speed of 3 knots, i.e. 5.4 km/h. Thus, such a submarine is unable to pursue an underwater target. The sub relies on intelligence information first and foremost. Hence, the main technique to use diesel-electric submarines in combat action is known as "veil" when submarines are deployed in a line perpendicular to the probable movement of the target, at specific distances from each other. The entire group of submarines receives commands from an external command post, which creates extra telltale factors and reduces the stability of underwater combat groups.
It has long been a dream for many navy engineers to create a submarine with a fundamentally new power plant that would combine the advantages of nuclear and diesel-electric submarines: power and stealth, longer autonomous diving and low noisiness.
Project 677 Lada: Major technological breakthrough
Russian submarines of Project 677 Lada with air-independent power plant will mark a serious breakthrough in this direction. The new submarine will take the Russian undersea fleet to new frontiers.
The Lada sub is not large - their displacement is almost twice as less as that of the famous Varshavyanka. Yet, its arms complex is unusually large. In addition to traditional mine and torpedo weapons (six 533-mm torpedo tubes, 18 torpedoes or mines), Project 667 is the world's first non-nuclear submarine, equipped with specialized launchers for cruise missiles (ten vertical launchers in the middle part of the body). These cruise missiles can be both tactical and long-range missiles designed to destroy strategic targets deep into enemy territory.
The most important feature of the new Russian submarine is the new air-independent propulsion plant. Without going into details, we would only say that with these power plants a Lada submarine will be submerged for up to 25 days - that is almost ten times longer than of its famous predecessor - Project 636.3Varshavyanka. To crown it all, the Lada submarine will be even less noisy than the famous "black hole" Varshavyanka, which the Americans dubbed so because it is almost impossible to detect it.
NATO countries, particularly Germany and Sweden, have long been trying to equip their submarines with such power plants. German shipbuilders have tried to build small submarines equipped with a hybrid power plant since late 1990s. It includes surface speed diesel engine for recharging batteries, silver-zinc batteries for energy-conserving underwater navigation and air-independent propulsion plant for energy-saving underwater navigation on the base of fuel cells that include tanks with cryogenic oxygen and metal hydride containers (special metal alloy with hydrogen).
The Germans succeeded in increasing the duration of underwater navigation of their submarines to 20 days. Presently, German submarines with air-independent propulsion plants of various modifications are in navy service in Germany, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Israel, Korea and several other countries.
Swedish group Kockums Submarin Systems began the construction of Gotland class submarines with air-independent propulsion power plants based on the so-called "Stirling engine". Swedish subs can also stay under water for up to 20 days without recharging batteries. Stirling engine submarines currently serve not only in Scandinavia, but also in Australia, Japan, Singapore and Thailand.
However, both German and Swedish submarines pale in comparison with Russian Lada submarines. Project 667 Lada is qualitatively a new generation of submarines.
Rubin Design Bureau - the main developer of submarines in Russia - designed the Lada to deliver salvo torpedo-missile strikes on marine and stationary ground targets both from torpedo tubes and specialized vertical missile silos. Due to the unique sonar system, the Russian sub has a significantly increased distance for target detection. It can submerge at the depth of 300 meters, develop underwater speed of up to 21 knots and submerged endurance of 45 days. To reduce noisiness, vibration isolators are used along with all-mode propulsion motor with permanent magnets. The hull of the submarine is covered with "Molniya" ("Lightning") material that absorbs sonar signals.
The Russian air-independent propulsion power plant will be a lot more energy conserving than its German analogue with up to 25 days of continuing underwater navigation. At the same time, Lada will be substantially less expensive than the German Project 212\214 sub.
Before 2020, the Russian Navy expects to receive 14 of new 4th generation submarines.
"Four to six of such submarines can completely block closed or semi-closed water area as of the Black, Baltic and Caspian Seas. Their advantages are obvious to any naval specialist," Vice-Admiral Viktor Patrushev said in an interview with RIA Novosti in late 2010.
The deployment of two or three groups of Lada submarines can fundamentally change the balance of power not only in the Baltic, Caspian and Black seas, but also in the North, in the Mediterranean water areas and in the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. In the North, in the Barents Sea, Lada will cover the routes of deployment of Russian strategic missile submarines from any activity that US and NATO forces may show. This will significantly improve the combat stability of the naval component of Russian strategic nuclear forces.
Presently, Russian missile cruisers are mainly on duty under the Arctic ice, where they are virtually inaccessible to enemy action. The Americans can detect, track and attack our submarine only at the stage of its transition to the combat patrol area. The Lada sub is ideally suited to counter US submarines as they hear them at much greater distances.
With regard to the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, the presence of Lada-type submarines in those waters nullifies the American naval power that is primarily based on aircraft carrier strike group
